I’ve been embracing the weekend getaway here in Southern California the last few months and a 3 day weekend provided the perfect time to get out of town for a day.
Matt was flying into Santa Barbara for work Monday morning and not leaving until today, so I decided to take the drive up and visit him.
Of course since we were able to meet up early, we had to start the day with brunch! I found the cutest little spot called The Shop Kitchen that was off the beaten path from the typical tourist spots in Santa Barbara and, therefore, not too crowded for a holiday.
I had the Chilaquiles and a glass of orange juice that tasted like it was straight from the tree. Matt had to try the “Rollex” since it was like a breakfast burrito but wrapped in a chapati, which is a type of flatbread from India.
We opted for a laid back day with nothing really planned. Sometimes those end up being the best days because you can stumble upon some hidden gems.
Some of our highlights included checking out Handsome Coffee Roasters where I tried a charcoal latte for the first time. While you can’t really taste the charcoal, I feel like it did subdue the espresso taste a little. I enjoyed it but it’s not a drink I would get regularly.
We then explored the town a little and visited El Presidio Real de Santa Barbara, which contains the second oldest surviving building in California.
From there we headed to the beach because the sun had finally decided to cut through the morning gloom and it was just too beautiful of a day to not go to the beach.
Right along the shore was a Maritime Museum that seemed appropriate to give a visit to since it was Memorial Day. The tour of the museum ended with a roof top view of the shore where I could have sat and enjoyed the sun all day.
