While it may not quite be December yet, Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is in full swing at my house. This really is my favorite time of year. I find it’s filled with so much love and joy that I can’t help but anticipate all the great moments to come in this season.
Growing up my family had many traditions. Some of which I still do today as well as other traditions I’ve started over the years. Now that Matt and I will be getting married next year, I’m excited to start new traditions with him as well.
To kick off the holiday season, I came up with a holiday bucket list for this year…
#1 Pick Out A Christmas Tree
Every year I go and pick out my tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. So this one has actually already been checked off for me. I was so happy to have Matt home this weekend to start a tradition of doing this together!
#2 Drive Around And Look At Christmas Lights
This is one tradition that has stuck around since I was a kid. Every year we would get some hot chocolate and drive around listening to Christmas music while we took in all the decorated houses in nearby neighborhoods.
#3 Mail Out Christmas Cards
Since I live on the on the opposite coast from my family and many friends, this is a great way to stay in touch and spread some Christmas love. Plus it’s nice to cozy up with some treats and spend an evening writing cards to everyone.
#4 Have A Christmas Movie Marathon
It’s not the Christmas season if you don’t catch a few holiday classics. I think it’s safe to say I’ve seen almost any major Christmas movie. Some of my favorites that I’m looking forward to this year are Polar Express, Home Alone, It’s A Wonderful Life, and A Christmas Story.
#5 Read The Christmas Story
This is a great Christmas Eve tradition. Gather your family around to share the story together… Make it your devotional for the day… No matter how you do it, remember to take time and reflect on the true story of Christmas.
“Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
#6 Have A Hot Cocoa Night At Home
I love to have people over around Christmas time but sometimes hosting an all out party is too much. Instead, a great idea is to invite a few friends over and set up a hot chocolate bar.
#7 Take Christmas Photos
This year is Matt and I’s first Christmas as an engaged couple and by next year we will be married, so I want to be sure to document this Christmas with him. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate, but just some nice photos by the tree will check this one off the list.
#8 Pick Out Stockings Together
Since we will be getting married and moving in this next year, I thought it would be cute to pick out stockings together to hang in our home next year. If your crafty enough, you could also make Christmas stockings as part of your bucket list.
#9 Build A Gingerbread House
I love the traditions I have but I think it’s always fun to start new ones. Matt and I thought it would be fun to try our hands at making gingerbread houses this year. We may fail miserably but the fun is in the process and the time spent together.
#10 Listen To Christmas Records
Those that know me, know that I love to collect vinyl. I have a fairly extensive collection of Christmas records in my collection. This is the time of year I can finally dust them off and listen to them to my hearts content.
#11 Get A Holiday Manicure
A fun and festive holiday manicure is a great way to have a little holiday “me” time. Get some Christmas colors or decorative details to jazz up your normal nail routine.
#12 Bake Christmas Cookies
What’s Christmas without some baked goodies? Growing up I remember my mom baking all sorts of cookies every year. Today I carry on that tradition by baking some of favorite recipes.
#13 Give A Gift To Someone In Need
To me, Christmas is all about giving. Not only to the people close to me, but also to those less fortunate. I always look for a way to give something to someone who may be in need.
#14 Plan A Winter Escape To Somewhere With Snow
Since I grew up on the East coast, I do still dream of a white Christmas. Since that seems improbable around Los Angeles, I have to plan a little getaway to see some snow. Luckily I can drive just a couple hours away to get my fix. A day trip to Big Bear should do just that!
#15 Make Cinnamon Rolls For Christmas Morning
My family has had this tradition for as long as I can remember. Every Christmas morning, my mom would bake cinnamon rolls. We would eat these delicious treats while opening our presents and spending the morning together.
No matter what is on your holiday bucket list, have fun with it! Don’t worry if you don’t cross everything off. The point is to create memories that you will be able to think back on in years to come.
Do you have any holiday traditions that are a must on your bucket list for the Christmas season?
